When I lived in a small apartment, when I heard people on TV say that they want to move because their house is too big, I understood that it probably meant it took longer to clean which is why they wanted to move. Now I am a homeowner and there are a couple of rooms I never use, and all I do is take a few minutes to vacuum them since they are still spotless clean since I am never in those rooms. So why do people say that their house is too big if you do not use the space then it doesn’t bother you. Unless these people use central heat and AC and it makes their bills higher? I use portable heaters and fans to save a lot of electricity so I do not have that problem if that is the case.
You are on the right track. Many folks say their house is too big because of the bills associated with numerous rooms to heat/cool that they never use. Furthermore, several rooms not being used is a "waste" to some as the square footage is not needed because it is not efficiently being used.
It isn’t only utility bills, and most people in colder areas use central heat, but your property taxes are based partly on size. Therefore they are paying for space they aren’t using.
well not only do most people use centeal heat ac so their bills are higher is a big reason but I mean if you have say a 5 bedroom house and use 2..you could of probably got a house for almost half the price a waste of mone..
Its not just the bills….As kids move on in life the family home can feel like an empty nest—–too big for current needs.
My house is just right, but my lot is to big. I have a pool and a side yard, it takes me almost a whole day to clean up.
I have lived in a 2-bedroom 1000 sq ft townhouse, a 3-bedroom 1700 sq ft house, and a 3-bedroom 1100 sq ft halfplex. I have come to the conclusion that 1100 is a little tight for a 3-bedroom house, but the 1700 was definitely too big. It was just me, the dog, and two cats, and there were rooms that I did nothing but walk past. If I hadn’t had that room, it wouldn’t have impacted my life any. And it can be a little depressing to have too much room… you start to feel like you should do SOMETHING with it. If I were to go house hunting again, I would probably shoot for the 1200-1500 sq foot range, because that just feels comfortable to me.
